Sandon Barns, Hertsfordshire
A sensitive conversion of a timber-framed Grade II Listed barn
into a light and spacious 5 bedroom home
The barn, outbuildings and their setting were carefully restored, renovated and landscaped to transform an at-risk and dilapidated structure and bring it back to life.
Externally the building is reclad with a vernacular black stained timber, with new glazing carefully positioned to fill the barn with sunlight. The internal volume is subdivided as little as possible, to enable the owners to fully enjoy the volume of the barn whilst still allowing it to function as a working home. New insertions and detailing are refined and modern, offering a counterpoint to the historic timber frame.
The very large central living space houses an open study mezzanine and snug, linked to the upper floor via an elegant steel framed gallery stair, adding usable space while retaining a sense of volume. Generous timber framed glazed screens open onto the rolling Hertfordshire countryside beyond.
