Bagatelle
Branksome Park

Nestled within the prestigious Branksome Park Conservation Area, Bagatelle stands as a testament to early 20th-century elegance. Constructed in 1923, this Locally Listed residence draws its external inspiration from the iconic Bagatelle in Paris, featuring rendered brickwork elevations adorned with sash windows and traditional shutters. Internally, the house boasts distinctive Art Deco flourishes, including bespoke doors, architraves, a sweeping staircase, and the original Crittall window that graces the main stairwell, illuminating the space with period charm.

At Ellis-Miller and Partners, we approached the restoration of this centenarian gem with unwavering respect for its heritage. As specialists in conservation and traditional architecture, our team meticulously preserved and enhanced the original fabric, ensuring every intervention honoured the house’s historical integrity. The brief encompassed a comprehensive refurbishment, reinstating Art Deco details akin to those employed in the 1920s—subtle yet evocative elements that breathe new life into the interiors while safeguarding their authenticity. Challenges inherent to working within a conservation area, such as navigating planning constraints and material sourcing, were met with innovative solutions that balanced fidelity to the past with modern functionality.

The project extended beyond mere preservation, incorporating contemporary amenities seamlessly integrated into the design. A luxurious swimming pool was discreetly positioned beneath an extended terrace on the side elevation, adjoining a state-of-the-art gym. Above, a three-car garage supports a self-contained guest flat, providing versatile accommodation without compromising the site’s aesthetic harmony. External enhancements, including ornate balustrading and bespoke gates, echo the era’s craftsmanship, reinforcing the property’s timeless appeal.

This holistic endeavour, completed at a total construction cost of £3,300,000, exemplifies our expertise in blending conservation principles with thoughtful expansion. By addressing edge cases such as structural reinforcements for subterranean features and ensuring sustainable material choices, we not only restored Bagatelle’s grandeur but also future-proofed it for generations.
