Ellis-Miller and Partners specialise in creating sustainable school architecture that inspires future generations. Our collaboration with Rutland County Council on the Uppingham Primary School project exemplifies this commitment. We integrated key initiatives like Every Child Matters, Extended Schools, Personalised Learning, Workforce Reform, and Building Schools for the Future, ensuring dynamic 21st-century learning environments that value learners and foster excellence.
Relocated to a prime site near Uppingham’s centre, the school benefits from enhanced access to residential areas. This blank-canvas opportunity allowed us to blend existing strengths with modern educational needs, embedding safety and security for all users, day and night.
Approaching the building, the oak-panelled facade harmonises with the local landscape, evolving seasonally through thoughtful planting. Our ecologically sustainable design promotes environmental awareness, making pupils active stewards. Outdoor spaces maximise active learning with gardens, wildlife areas, ponds, and nature trails. High-quality sports facilities, complete with changing rooms, showers, and storage, support skill development for pupils and community members. Each classroom connects directly to tailored external zones: secure, stimulating play areas for early years with covered spaces for year-round use, positioned near family rooms for seamless parent involvement. Key Stage 1 and 2 zones offer flexible spots for quiet reflection, discussions, and exploration, supervised yet encouraging independence. All-weather play areas provide diverse activities during breaks.
Entrances prioritise safety, minimising bullying risks with minimal supervision needed from pavements, cycle storage, and parking. Proximity to main school, nursery, and community areas eases parental anxiety and builds a welcoming ethos.
Our design ensures every pupil thrives in the 21st century, promoting partnerships among staff, families, agencies, and the community. Extended School facilities are self-contained, supporting family learning, health, and social care. The training room, equipped with advanced ICT, facilitates joint initiatives to boost achievement.
Learning progression flows uninterrupted from Nursery to Year 6, with spaces for joint staff planning. The nursery encourages exploration through role play, making, and evaluation, with ample facilities and links to ‘The Beach’—a heated central hub for interaction and autonomy—and Reception classes. Reception and Key Stage classrooms feature adaptable areas for whole-class teaching, groups, ICT, and practical work, extending outdoors to apply skills diversely. Shared zones enable multi-provider sessions.
ICT integration throughout supports cross-curricular learning. Specialist areas like the library (for study and research with digital tools), music rooms, and dual halls (one for PE, the other for drama and dining) enhance versatility. Adjacent changing facilities aid after-hours use. Toilets and cloakrooms cater to age-specific needs.
Administrative spaces welcome visitors, ensure security, and celebrate successes, with dedicated staff areas for meetings, preparation, and relaxation.
Ellis-Miller and Partners is proud to deliver this exemplary sustainable school design, equipping Uppingham and Rutland with a forward-thinking facility to meet evolving educational demands.
Sustainability was embedded from the outset: the building employs cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure, ground-source heat pumps, photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting, high thermal mass and full natural ventilation. Once again the design draws on Jonathan Ellis-Miller’s CABE experience to deliver an exemplary contemporary learning environment.
